Why take up the challenge of college basketball of course.

The idea of putting hockey players in tighter uniforms is stupid of course. The only position on the ice in need of tighter uni's is of course the goalie. But Bettman is determined to "streamline" the league and this is another in a series of attempts on his part to do it.

Well this week is the NHL All Star Break so perhaps it's a good time to take a look back and then a look ahead at the season so far and to come.

Clearly the individual story of the year in the NHL to this point is the emergence of Crosby as the best player in the game. He is so far ahead of anyone else at just the age of 19, well one wonders just how good he will become eventually.

On a team basis, Buffalo and Anaheim have been the standard bearers for their conferences for most of the first half. But both has shown some recent slippage allowing teams like Ottawa, Nashville, Vancouver, and New Jersey to perhaps believe they can make a run in the season's second half.

The Divisional Playoffs Weekend

The NFL gets down to business this weekend. The four best teams from the Fall take on the four winners from last week's Wild Card games.

Usually, this weekend's slate of games are about as interesting as watching paint dry. With a week off, rested, and fully healthy, the favourites this weekend tend to mop up the floor with their opponents.

But, this season, I happen to think we may see something just a wee bit different.

And why is that? Well look no more than the four home teams and their rather sizable and obvious weakenesses.

Chicago - the QB position - Grossman could lose the game all by himself for them
New Orleans - uhh...they're the Saints!!!??? the Saints for heavens sake

Four weeks to go in this years NFL season and to say the least, things are still rather unsettled. Especially so given the recent play of Indy and the Bear QB.

As if this game needed anymore focus on it, it just got some. With the passing of Bo Schembechler yesterday, the Game of the Century just became even bigger thanks to the icon that was Bo in Ann Arbour last century.

Well, the Nascar season has but one race left, and unfortunately for the fools that run the series, their contrived little playoff system has not exactly had the intended effect. In a shock to no one, Woods is skipping the Tour Championship this week and probably will not play again this year. How many actual events did he even play this year? 10? 11? If I were the tournaments on the outside looking in at the events he actually deigns to show up for, I'd be telling the PGA Tour that there is no way in hell I'm providing the big bucks that they now expect. Why should they. They know their number one draw is not showing up so why should they pony up any extra cash.

The Breeders Cup

The Breeders Cup World Thoroughbred Championships take place this weekend at Churchill Downs. For a good look at who I like, check out The Pick Of The Day over the next few days.

But before we get to the nitty gritty of the betting, first a few comments.

The Breeders Cup, while far and away the best day of racing on this continent, is not even close to living up to its grandiose moniker of the "World Thoroughbred Championships". Between Arc Day at Longchamp, Champions Day at Newmarket, The Canadian International and EP Taylor at Woodbine, and then the Hong Kong and Japan Cups later on in the year, the best turf horses in the world are now more and more likely to bypass the Breeders Cup in favor of bigger purses, shorter travel, and less onerous qualifying restrictions.

How can the BC fix this problem and regain it's eminance? Simple. MORE MONEY.

Every single race in the BC is now worth 2million. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Not Close. The purse for the whole day should be doubled, and specifically the purse for the Breeders Cup Turf should be increased to 8 million.

Then, and only then, might we actually see the world's greatest animals all gathered together on one day. Instead of just having the best on the dirt as we have now.

Tonight the puck drops on the NHL's 2006-2007 season and after previewing each conference the last two days, I have a few other predictions for the forthcoming season.

1 - Scoring, I'm sad to say, will decline this year. Last year they finished out at 6.1 goals per game. An almost full goal a game leap from the seaon prior to the lockout. But with the players having had a year of the new standard under their belts there will be fewer penalties and thus fewer power plays this season. Your job's not done Gary, you pint sized buffoon. BIGGER NETS!!!! They will not, as some say, destroy the integrity of the league, but in fact restore it. By simply restoring the ratio of goalie to net we had 20 years ago. With giants like Luongo now tending the twine, there is nothing to shoot at any more. Don't rest on your laurels from last season NHL, I demand an even more wide open game where skill predominates. Get on with it.

2 - My two Stanely Cup finalists, which of course you can bet on right here at BetBug: BUFFALO vs ANAHEIM. With Anaheim hoisting the trophy in 6 games. Remember that X-Files episode, Buffalo is not allowed to win anything...ever.

3 - And of course what would a hockey season be without another lost year (closing in on 40 now aren't they) for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This collection of no talent, slow footed, over paid bums have as much chance to hoist the Cup as my little cousin's peewee team. But don't let his Penguin passion fool you. As much as he cares about winning the Cup, and he will win many, I am quite certain he also realizes that Gold in 2010 in Vancouver is the only one true way to hockey immortality.

NHL Western Conference

Today we look at the other side of the league, the Western Conference.

Last season, I thought that all the power in the league resided in the East and basically that anyone could emerge from the West.

And that is just what occured. The top four seeds in the West all lost in the first round of the playoffs and Edmonton, who barely scraped into the top 8 ended up in the Cup Final.

This year, that is not what will be happening. Specifically, with Detroit picking up the best goalie in the league (just take a look at his stats before he was injured), with Anaheim (yes I like a team called the Ducks...God help me) now sporting what may be the best ever blue line tandem in the history of the league, with Calgary just being right pissed at losing early last year, and with Thorton out in San Jose for a full season, well it looks to me like those four teams are far and away the class of the Conference.

If you want a sleeper, I would look to Phoenix. I love JR to have a huge comeback year (he is in wicked shape and has much to prove) and they have completely overhauled their blueline. Plus Gretzky, I'm assuming, has picked up a couple of things in the last year and now may actually not be a complete gongshow behind the bench

A fun week awaits as the hockey season is about to kick off.

First things first. I do not think the Sens will be anything like they were last year. Losing Havlat, Charaa, and especially Hasek is going to hurt. Their goaltending position is just a fight waiting to happen. Yes, they still have the player I am calling to win the Art Ross Troyhy this season, in Spezza, but they have lost too many other integral parts. Carolina is still looking good again, but they have lost a few players and alredy are going to be missing Frantisek Kaberle for some time. They do get Cole back for the year and of course still have Staal, but I would just be surprised if they are still as hungry as last season.

The Rangers are going to take a big time fall I think. Jagr is already struggling with injuries and there is no way Mr. Lundqvist is going to reproduce the season he had last year.

The team I like to actually repeat their success from last season is the Buffalo Sabres. Let us not forget they had the lead heading into the third period in the Conference Final Game 7 against the Canes, and really only lost because they literally had NO defensemen left to play.

The Sabre's style meshes perfectly with the way the game is being called these days and I think Ryan Miller is about to become the next great goaltender in this league.

NASCAR heads to Kansas Speedway for the Banquet 400 this weekend.

Jeff Burton is the new chase leader, thanks to his win in last weekend's Dover 400.

Can Burton hold of Gordon, Kenseth, and Hamlin? Hard to say. Certainly Kenseth will take alot of beating this week. But Burton has had a very consistent season and you never know.

One of the giants from the world of golf passed away yesterday. Byron Nelson won 5 majors during his career, which alone is a rather large accomplishment. But of course what he was best known for was his streak of 11 straight PGA Tour wins in 1945. A feat which today just boggles the mind.

Tiger Woods has in fact won 5 in row right now, and in England this week he is +250 at BetBug to win the AMEX Championship. And while he may well do it, the thought of him winning this plus his next FIVE MORE tournaments, just to tie Lord Nelson's record, well that almost seems impossible in this day and age.

Well, the States may have the World's #1, #2, and #3 players but when it comes to the Ryder Cup, there are not just inferior, they are nowhere.

And I must admit, I was wrong. I thought with Woods and Mickelson et al, the Americans finally this time would at the very least put up a proper showing.

Uh...ya...18.5 - 9.5 OUCH.

In two years hence, if you see www.BetBug.com with odds on the Euro's as the favorites at Valhalla, and someone tries to talk you out of backing them, just keep betting. The US may never win another one of these things. At least not until Sergio is old and decrepit at any rate.

WEEK 3

Talk about short memories. At BetBug this week, the Steelers are lowly 2 point favorites AT HOME against Cincinnati.

Just because the Steelers had a tough game last week against the Jags (nationally televised...), everyone and their mother seem to be jumping off the bandwagon.

These are still the defending Super Bowl Champions folks. And they are on home turf. They didn't just forget how to win. Laying less than a FG with the Champs just strikes me as shockingly low.

I think Mr. Palmer's great start to the season is about to come to a screeching halt and the champs are going re-establish themselves today in Pittsburgh.

Well with all the revelations coming out of Southern Cal lately, I guess we can all see why they were such a force the last 3 college football seasons.

The people of LA don't need a pro team because, for heavens sake, they've got USC, where heck, even if they are a college team, they pay their players anyway!

Well let it not be said we are silly enough to ignore this. www.BetBug.com has the semi pro Trojans as fairly massive 21.5 point favorites today on the road against Arizona.

And while USC may well be forced to forfeit some of their prior wins, the gambling public certainly does not have to forgo any of the cash this pro team made them.

The White Cliffs of Dover

Well last week's race saw Kevin Harvick scooting between cars to grab the lead and then run away and hide from the rest of the pack and take over the lead in the Chase for the Cup.

This week sees the boys return to Dover in what should be another great race and probably even better finish.

One man who did himself some serious harm last week was Jimmie Johnson. By finishing way up the track last week, he is now really up against it. And for an example of how just one bad finish can completely wreck your chances in this ten race sprint to the finish, just check Carl Edwards from last year.
